Raw Survey File Summary Software Help

Overview

The raw files produced by total stations often have time stamps that can be used to calculate how quickly points are being captured by surveyors. By analyzing the raw survey files the total amount of points, points by type, points per minute, and other metrics can all be calculated on hourly time steps. Having this information allows for comparisons to be made between crews, sites and checks can be made that backsight checks are being performed adequately throughout the day. This humble program takes in a raw survey file as input and breaks down the amount of points by type per hour to provide more insight into how data is collected.

Below is a list of tools that help is provided for:

Process Raw Survey File

Overview:

Creates a summary text file for one raw survey that can be read into other statistical software for further analysis. The user clicks the Process Raw Survey File button and is given a file directory dialogue. Choose the file to be summarized. Upon completion a pop-up menu will let the user know the file path and name of the output file created. The summary file will be placed in the same folder as the input file and will have the same name just with '_Output.txt' tacked onto the file name.

Inputs:
1. .Raw survey file

Output:
1. Comma delimited text file that summarizes the data collected in hour time steps. The columns (headers are included in file) are hour (in military time),  pts/min*, total points collected during that hour, side shot, back sight check, occupy point, and rod height change.

*pts/min is normalized meaning some hours data was not collected during the entire hour, for this reason points per minute is calculated by dividing the total number of points collected divided by the number of minutes worked that hour.

Batch Process Raw Survey Files

Overview:

Creates a summary text file for each raw survey file contained in the provided folder that can be read into other statistical software for further analysis. The user clicks the Process Raw Survey File button and is given a file directory dialogue. Choose the folder containing the files to be summarized. Upon completion a pop-up menu will let the user know the only the file path where the output files are contained . The summary files will be placed in the same folder as the input files and will have the same name just with '_Output.txt' tacked onto the file names.

Inputs:
1.  Folder containing .raw survey files

Outputs:
1. Same comma delimited text files as the single file processing tool but for all .raw files contained in the folder.

Create Plots (in development)

Overview:

To better understand the how the points per minute may change throughout a day. This tool provides a simple linear plot of pts/min by the hour of the day. The user clicks on the tool, a file directory dialogue pops up prompting the user to choose a raw file. Upon choosing the file the plot is produced the user can visually examine the plot and within this interface choose to save the plot or close it.

Inputs:
1.  Raw survey file

Outputs:
1. Linear plot of pts/min by hour of the day.

Create Plots Batch (in development)

Overview:

Same as create plots but for a folder containing raw files. This tool does not allow the user to visually inspect the plot but automatically saves them to be viewed later.

Inputs:
1.  Folder containing .raw survey files

Outputs
2. Folder of linear plots of pts/min by hour of the day for each file within the input folder.

Summary of Batch Processed Raw Survey Files (in development)

Overview:

Summarizes the output files from the batch process raw survey files tool. This helps to gain greater insight into differences and similarities between study sites.

Inputs:
1. Folder containing the summary text files

Outputs:
1. A single file summarizing all of the output text files within the input folder.
